Obituary for Stephen Neubaum

STEPHEN EDGAR NEUBAUM
September 15, 1945 - May 25, 2018
Stephen Edgar Neubaum lived a noble life; giving honor to his parents, endearment to his wife, wholeheartedness to his friends and took great pride in his children. He left a special mark on this earth and had an open hand to anyone he crossed paths with. Steve was known for his contagious laugh and smile. His zest for life impacted those around him.
An Oakdale native, Steve was the youngest child of Edgar and Evelyn Neubaum. He attended Oakdale High School, class of 1964, and was an active baseball, basketball and cross country athlete. After graduating, he served in the United States Air Force and then continued on to Modesto Junior College ultimately earning his Bachelor's degree in Sociology from CSU, Stanislaus. Steve was a Supervising Counselor at San Joaquin County Juvenile Hall where he retired.
In 1978, he married his ladylove, Susan Beltrami Arlin. They enjoyed playing golf, spending time at their second home in Los Osos, California and traveling, which most recently included a trip down the Rhine River and Paris in May. Together they raised their four children: Aeron, Stephen, Kerry and Lauren; sharing fun memories of camping, running and conversations around the dinner table.
Steve's other passion was his church. He was an active lifelong member of Saints John and Luke Lutheran Church in Oakdale and Valley Home serving in a variety of ways. It was a privilege for him to share the late Pastor Schack's sermons with the congregation. Steve's encouragement towards others extended beyond the church walls. He had a way of relating to others which made them feel accepted, encouraged and valued.
Since he was 30 years old, Steve ran every weekday of his life, rain or shine, at home or away. When he turned 70, he achieved his life-long goal of running 40 minutes a day for 40 years. In his final years, he continued to run daily, but (only) 30 minutes a day. Running was his commitment to good health, a youthful spirit and was a major part of devotion to his faith in Christ. On his last day, Steve completed a run on May 25 in Los Osos just prior to departing this life.
Steve is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan; his son, Stephen (Sonia) Neubaum of Oakdale; and three daughters Aeron Arlin (Marc) Genet of Los Osos, Kerry (Shaun) Templeton of Spokane and Lauren (Matt) Tuggle of San Diego; grandsons, Luke and Zane Neubaum, Keenan and Shay Templeton, and Levi and Asher Tuggle. He also leaves his sister, Sharon Neubaum Arpoika of Oakdale. He was predeceased by his parents, Edgar J. Neubaum and Evelyn Ritchey Neubaum.
